The old road to Vama Veche

The old road to the Romanian Seaside is probably the initiation for all local riders looking for adventure. This is the alternative route to the boring highway, full of tourists, buses and lorries.

The first 60 km are a bit bland, but soon after the landscape changes completely. You charge into beautiful fields of poppies, rapeseeds, vineyards and other colorful herbs fields and plants.

Best time to ride

We recommend June or August. It's not too hot outside during the day and after a few hours of riding, you can enjoy a well-deserved swim in the sea.

Surface

The road tends to be well paved. It takes you through villages, so you might come about sand or mud on the road from the tractors and other agricultural vehicles roaming about, especially in curves. Not to worry, but it's good to pay attention (anyway, anytime) and have your wits about you.

Near Calarasi, the Danube crossing will be by ferry. There are rides every half an hour during the day. Entering the ferry crossing is a little bumpy, so approach it with care.

Traffic

Because it is not a main road to any specific destination, the road is rather empty most of the times. You might encounter some local cars and a tractor or two, maybe even some buggies, but you are definitely not in danger of finding yourself in any traffic jam in this context.

Scenery

It is beautiful throughout the motorcycle season. Views are spectacular from spring to autumn, with lots of flowers and colored fields, that change during the year.

Police

For the most part, the road is police free. You need to be cautious when you approach Calarasi and after the ferry near Orsova, because the road is near a border crossing.

Food and drink

The only city you will pass by, on this road, is Calarasi. So if you really want to eat at a restaurant, you can enter the city to find a proper one. On the other hand, we recommend packing sandwiches or stopping by the local shops or bars in the villages.
